You play video games. But what if it could pay for your college education in the United States?

While gaming is still often seen as just a hobby across much of the region, American universities have been treating esports as a fully recognized sport for years — complete with coaches, dedicated arenas, competitive teams, and scholarships that can help cover tuition, housing, and meal plans.
Initium Sports is the first agency in the region to recognize the growing potential of esports scholarships and include them as part of its services, seeing them as an excellent opportunity for players who want to combine higher education with competitive gaming in the United States.

How Does Esports Work at American Universities?

Esports at U.S. universities functions similarly to traditional collegiate sports. Universities have official teams, organized competitions, professional coaching staff, and scholarship opportunities awarded based on a player’s skill level and competitive profile.
The leading governing body of collegiate esports in the United States is the NACE (National Association of Collegiate Esports). Since its founding in 2016 with only seven member institutions, NACE has grown to include more than 260 member institutions by 2025 — a clear indication of how rapidly this sector is expanding.

Today, more than 240 American universities offer varsity esports programs with scholarship opportunities, while the total annual scholarship funding available through NACE institutions amounts to approximately $16 million.

Requirements vary depending on the university, but in general, applicants are expected to have:

  • A gaming portfolio — gameplay footage, player profiles, and gaming platform accounts (such as Twitch, Riot ID, Steam, Battle.net, and others)

In addition to scholarship opportunities for players, Initium Sports also offers support with applications for online certificate programs designed for individuals interested in building careers within the esports industry — whether as organizers, managers, or coaches.
